BYU accepts invitation to play in Hawaii Bowl

Postseason invitations won’t be handed out en masse for another couple of weeks, but one FBS program knows where they’ll be bowling next month.

Saturday afternoon, BYU took care of its business with Idaho State, easily getting past the FCS school in a 42-10 win. With the win, BYU’s sixth of the season, the Cougars became bowl-eligible for the second straight season and 14th time in the past 15 years.

A couple of hours after the win, BYU announced in a press release that they have accepted an invitation to play in the SoFi Hawai’i Bowl. That game will take place at Aloha Stadium on Christmas Eve night (in the Eastern time zone).

This will mark the Cougars’ second postseason appearance on the islands, with the first coming in the Aloha Bowl in 1992.

“We are looking forward to playing in the SoFi Hawai’i Bowl,” said BYU head football coach Kalani Sitake in a statement. “I’m really proud of our players and pleased they have earned this opportunity to continue to improve as a program and have one more game together with our seniors. Hawai’i is a wonderful place and dear to my heart. I’m excited to take our team to the Islands to experience the warmth of the culture and the Aloha Spirit.”

As for the opponent, BYU will square off with a team from either the American Athletic Conference or the Mountain West.
