Bayou Bengals sweep major polls, land atop BCS polls again

Well, it certainly didn’t take long for the BCS standings to get shaken up, did it?

When the first BCS standings were revealed last week, a perfect 10 teams remained unbeaten. But within the span of a couple of hours late last night, two fell from those ranks, as Michigan State executed an improbable Hail Mary against Wisconsin and Texas Tech went into Norman, OK, and did what 39 previous opponents could not: knock off the No. 3 Sooners.

That leaves eight undefeated teams, four of which will face each other in the coming weeks. Alabama hosts LSU on a highly-anticipated Nov. 5 showdown; Oklahoma State will have Kansas State the same day. That’s assuming, of course, that the Wildcats are still undefeated on that date. K-State will host the Sooners this Saturday, Oct. 29, and OU is almost a two touchdown favorite. Oklahoma State will have to fend off Baylor on the 29th as well.

Looking at the rankings this week, LSU and Alabama remain at the top two positions, and the Cowboys control their own BCS destiny at No. 3. Boise State and Clemson round out the Top 5, but barring a trip up from two of the top three teams, you have to wonder if those two schools have hit their respective ceilings.

Michigan State jumps up to No. 11 after that thrilling win over Bucky, but the rankings were largely unaffected from spots 11-20 because of victories and bye weeks. West Virginia’s embarrassing loss to Syracuse Friday night casts the Mountaineers as the biggest losers, as WVU drops 10 spots to No. 25; Georgia Tech, Illinois and Washington all dropped out this week after losses.

Following their 41-38 victory over OU, Texas Tech enters the BCS at No. 20. Amazingly, and despite getting throttled by LSU 45-10, Auburn only drops three spots to No. 23.
