Jerry Sandusky: ‘It’s a sad day!’

On Nov. 4, reports surfaced that Jerry Sandusky, who for three decades was a trusted assistant on Joe Paterno‘s Penn State coaching staff, was indicted on 40 counts relating to the sexual molestation of at least seven young boys. Five days later, Paterno’s 60-plus coaching career with the Nittany Lions was over, dismissed by the school’s board of trustees as criticism rained down on the university over its handling of the scandal.

Now, on the day of Paterno’s death and as he awaits trial on what’s now more than 50 charges, the alleged pedophile has decided to chime in on the sad development.

In a statement released through his attorney, Sandusky praised his former boss for “maintain[ing] a high standard” and “practic[ing] what he preached.” Of course, there was nary a mention of how his alleged abhorrent behavior was the overriding factor in Paterno’s demise as a football coach.

Anyway, here’s the statement. Do with it as you wish:

“This is a sad day! Our family, Dottie and I would like to convey our deepest sympathy to Sue and her family. Nobody will be able to take away the memories we all shared of a great man, his family, and all the wonderful people who were a part of his life.

“He maintained a high standard in a very difficult profession. Joe preached toughness, hard work and clean competition. Most importantly, he had the courage to practice what he preached.”
