A MWC prez says Boise St. reports are premature

Over the course of the last week, two different reports had Boise State either more likely than not or with a decent chance to be offered a spot in the Mountain West Conference when league presidents meet in Wyoming beginning June 6.

One league president, however, stated that those reports have jumped the gun.

Speaking to the Idaho Statesman, San Diego State’s Stephen Weber said of the speculation that “anybody that thinks they have a clue doesn’t have a clue.

Having said that, Weber also hinted that the tide of opinion toward expansion seems to be changing amongst presidents in the league who may have previously been against it.

“I expect the conversation to be, ‘Is it time to expand?’ That’s sort of the threshold question,” he said. “In the past, it’s tended toward, ‘No, it’s not. We don’t see any reason to change.’ My personal opinion is there are more of my colleagues that are likely to say yes.”

It will take a thumbs up from seven of the nine presidents in order to add a new member, and, while expansion may not officially be on the agenda for the June meetings, there’s still a possibility that a vote could be taken regarding Boise State’s entering the league.
