Miami-Rutgers game at Yankee Stadium may be ‘imminent’

Back in mid-July, reports surfaced that a Miami-Temple game at Yankee Stadium was a possibility. Earlier this month, the head of The U’s athletic department met with members of the Yankees organization to continue talks on a future game.

Two months after the initial report, the venue for a future Hurricanes remains the same, but the opponent will likely come from a BcS conference.

Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt spoke to a group of reporters Wednesday evening while dining with several school officials and a Yankee Stadium representative, and confirmed that a game at the home of MLB’s Yankees with Rutgers “could be imminent.” The game would be played in 2013.

“I’d like to have a presence in New York every four or five years. It makes sense for us,” Hocutt said in explaining the reasoning behind pursuing a neutral site game in the Northeast.

Miami and Rutgers last played in 2003; the Hurricanes have won all 11 games in the series.
