With Croom out, Groh emerges as a front-runner for Tide vacancy

By way of Sylvester Croom himself, word came down Friday that the former Mississippi State head coach was no longer a candidate for the lone vacancy on Nick Saban‘s Alabama coaching staff.

That departure from the process, apparently, has left Mike Groh somewhere near the driver’s seat.

Citing multiple sources, the Tuscaloosa News is reporting that the indicators are Groh is a leading contender to fill the vacancy made available by the departure of Curt Cignetti for the head-coaching job at Div. II Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It’s believed Groh, the former Virginia offensive coordinator and one-time grad assistant at ‘Bama in 2009, has already spoken to Saban regarding the opening.

Groh is not the only coach under consideration, though, as the News also reports that Lance Taylor (no relation) is under consideration. Like Groh, Taylor has also been a grad assistant at the school, and is currently an assistant with the New York Jets.
