Report: WAC commish expected to take same job with the Sun Belt

How far has the WAC sunk as a football conference since Boise State’s departure for the Mountain West a couple of years ago?

Just take a look at the headline and allow it to sink in. There’s your sign.

The speculation around college football in recent weeks had WAC commissioner Karl Benson taking the same position with the Sun Belt Conference. According to Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com, that is expected to happen, with Benson likely taking over stewardship of the SBC April 1.

The current commissioner, Wright Waters, is retiring.

While Benson has overseen two conference members qualifying for BcS bowls on his watch, the conference is more known for the attrition that’s gutted membership in recent years. In addition to Boise State, the WAC will lose Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada to the Mountain West this year.

Texas State and UT-San Antonio will move up from Div. 1-AA to Div. 1-A and join the WAC this year, giving the conference seven football-playing members in 2012.
