WVU reportedly reaching into 1-AA ranks for new defensive assistant

Two defensive assistant spots remain open at West Virginia, but one of them may be closing soon.

The Charleston Gazette reports that Stephen F. Austin assistant Erik Slaughter (great name) could be joining Dana Holgorsen‘s staff. The hire has not been made official by WVU, but Slaughter has resigned from the SFA staff after spending the weekend in Morgantown to interview for the job, according to West Virginia MetroNews.

Slaughter coached defensive line for the Lumberjacks, a spot still open for the Mountaineers with the departure of D-line coach Bill Kirelawich to Arizona. WVU receivers coach Shannon Dawson was the former offensive coordinator at SFA.

WVU has already filled one defensive vacancy with the hire of former Oklahoma State assistant Joe DeForest, leaving just one more open spot if the Slaughter reports come to fruition. The Mountaineers’ defensive staff would have been complete had recently hired coach Mike Smith not reversed course and gone back to the New York Jets.

Former Oklahoma State coach Bob Simmons said the other day he had interest in joining WVU’s staff, although he has not spoken to Holgorsen about a job.
