Rees, Calabrese suspended for Notre Dame opener

Trying to evade police breaking up a house party will result in the suspension for Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees.

In a Tuesday release, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly announced that Rees and linebacker Carlo Calabrese would miss the Irish’s season-opening game against Navy. The game will be played in Dublin, Ireland.

“Our players understand that it’s a privilege to be associated with the University of Notre Dame and its football program, but with that comes great responsibility,” Kelly said. “Carlo and Tommy put themselves in a situation that when given a choice between two distinct paths, they responded with a set of poor decisions. This conduct was inconsistent with my expectations for our football program – especially our veteran, team leaders. Carlo and Tommy will not travel with the team to Ireland and can attempt to climb the depth chart following the conclusion of their respective suspensions.”

Rees and Calabrese were at an off campus house party in May that was broken up by police. Rees, 20, tried to evade officers and reportedly “actively resisted” arrest while Calabrese “became vocal” in attempting to help his teammate. That’s when the linebacker reportedly told an officer “my people will get you.”

Rees eventually pleaded guilty to a pair of misdemeanor charges: resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor, and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, a Class C misdemeanor. Calabrese was charged with a misdemeanor count of intimidation
