Short answer? Yes, if you want to ensure marquee matchups are a part of college football’s future.
As you know have seen or heard by now, No. 2 (Associated Press, coaches) Alabama took Michigan to the whoodshed, drug the Wolverines back out by the hair, then kicked them back in for another beating, eviscerating the No. 8 team in the country to the tune of 41-14 in a score that doesn’t even begin to explain the depth of the carnage wrought by the Tide.
USC, the No. 1 team in the country according to the AP (No. 3 by the coaches), wasn’t too shabby itself, easily coming away with a 39-point win in the opener. LSU, the No. 1 team according to the coaches’ poll, thumped their opponent in the season opener by 27 points. The difference? The Trojans and Tigers topped unranked Hawaii and North Texas, respectively, at home, while the Tide ripped the heart and soul of a Top 10 team on a neutral field.
CFT had Alabama at No. 3 in our preseason poll, with USC at No. 1 (Oklahoma was No. 2, although I’ll place the blame for that squarely in the lap of heavy meth use that day). If we had a vote that mattered, the Tide would be No. 1 on the post-Week 1 ballot, with the Trojans a solid No. 2.
