Tommy Tuberville to become the next coach at Cincinnati

There’s a reason why coaching searches are part of the so-called silly season.

In a move equally as surprising -- if not more so -- than Bret Bielema to Arkansas, Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville has resigned and will take the same position at Cincinnati.

We’ll give you a moment to rub your eyes.

Footballscoop.com first reported the news Saturday afternoon with Chris Level of RedRaiderSports.com later adding to the report. A Tech spokesperson confirmed to Nick Kosmider of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal a short time later. Cincinnati is set to make a formal announcement at 6:30 this evening.

The news comes just one day after former Bearcats coach Butch Jones resigned to take the same position at Tennessee. Tuberville has been TTU’s head coach since 2010 when he took over for Mike Leach. He has a 20-17 overall record in three seasons in Lubbock, but never seemed to quite fit in.

Now, Tuberville is on his way out.

On the flip side, Cincinnati is reversing trend. UC’s past three hires -- Mark Dantonio, Brian Kelly and Butch Jones -- have all used their success to launch their careers into the next phase. Tuberville is a veteran that could bring some stability that’s been lacking over the past several years, even though the turnover has been the result of the program’s success.
