Former Auburn standout Philip Lutzenkirchen killed in car accident

Tragedy struck the Auburn family this weekend. Former standout tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen was killed in a car accident early Sunday morning. Lutzenkirchen was just 23 years old.

Lutzenkirchen was widely regarded as one of the best players in Auburn football history and he was a key player on Auburn’s BCS championship squad of 2010. According to a report by USA Today, Lutzenkirchen was in a one-vehicle crash in LaGrange, Georgia. He was in a car with three others when the car reportedly ran through a stop sign and lost control before tumbling a few times. Joseph Ian Davis, the driver of the vehicle, was also killed in the accident. Two others were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating the accident to see if alcohol played any role in the tragic accident, but there are no reports to confirm whether or not that is the case at this time.

Lutzenkirchen is Auburn’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions by a tight end with 14. He had to retire after a hip injury in 2012.
