Reinstatement likely close for Garcia, Mangus

And, please, save your “like coach, like player” juvenile potshots for some other place because we won’t have that crap here.

As you no doubt know by now, South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia and his position coach, G.A.Mangus, have both dealt with off-field issues this offseason, with the former suspended/partially suspended since April for an alcohol-fueled incident while the latter was arrested and suspended earlier this week for an alcohol-fueled peeing-in-public episode. Both, though, could be back in the football program’s good graces in relatively short order.

Speaking Thursday at his annual media golf outing Spurrier said Garcia could be reinstated fully to the team as early as this coming Monday. Garcia was reinstated “on a probationary basis” in late May, and, as has been the case for months, has apparently been doing everything asked of him.

“Stephen Garcia has changed his lifestyle almost completely,” Spurrier said according to the Charleston Post & Courier. “He’s been on time, no goofing around. He’s being very serious. He’s showing a commitment we’ve never seen before.

“Now, hopefully that will continue. I expect it to continue.”

As for Garcia’s coach and a return, Spurrier, the Post & Courier writes, hinted it could even happen by the time camp opens Wednesday.

“I think G.A. is very remorseful,” Spurrier said. “He knows that if he has one more incident such as this, his coaching career could be over.”

Additionally, Spurrier said that defensive back DeVonte Holloman, arrested on a drunk-driving charge earlier this year, will likely be suspended for the season opener against East Carolina.
