Tulsa’s Damaris Johnson taken in on felony warrant

Updating a story from Wednesday, Tulsa wide receiver Damaris Johnson was arrested Thursday after being taken into custody on a felony embezzlement charge, Tulsa World reports.

A warrant for the arrest of Johnson had been issued yesterday, accusing the 2010 second-team All-American of paying just over $13 for roughly $2,800 in merchandise at a local Macy’s department store late last month. Johnson’s girlfriend, Chamon Jones, works at the store; she’s already been charged and is free on bond.

Johnson’s bond had been set at $1,500; he was released an hour after being booked into jail.

“Both Mr. Johnson and Ms. Jones have been cooperative with law enforcement during the investigation,” first assistant district attorney Doug Drummond said in a statement. “As with any other person charged with a crime, they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”

Johnson was suspended indefinitely Aug. 26 after his name surfaced in connection to the incidents, which occurred between Aug. 20 and Aug. 25. The school reiterated today that he “remains suspended indefinitely from all team activities.”

“Obviously we have an idea of what they are alleging, but we are gathering evidence and seeking the best resolution for this matter,” Danny Williams, the legal counsel for both Johnson and Jones, told the paper. “I suspect we will solve it sooner than later. ...

“He’s trying to get this resolved, stay in school and graduate. He’s not leaving school and running. He wants to take care of this and do what he can do to get back on the field.”

Johnson, the NCAA’s leader in career all-purpose yards, was the team’s leading receiver last year with 57 receptions for 872 yards and four touchdowns. He was also the team’s second-leading rusher with 560 yards and seven touchdowns, and returned a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown.
